Scary. Not as scary as watching that film with my brother drinking half a bottle of vodka though. He got a little *to* into it. Banging his fist on the table and doing ‘The Grin’. I chose The Shining for my “reading period book” at school aged 12. It looked a bit odd sitting in the book box with all the puffin titles. In the book the hedge maze has moving topiary animals. It’s probably just as well Kubrick didn’t attempt that. You’d be getting all scared when he breaks through the door with an axe and then he’d chase Danny out into the snow only to be confronted by a cross between Rod Hull’s Emu and a shrub.

I probably shouldn’t have said Emu. Judging by the oft trotted out Parkinson clip you’re probably far more likely to be attacked by Rod Hull’s emu than you are a winter caretaker hotellier. Rod Hull died trying to adjust his roof mounted TV antenna. Rumour has it that the Emu purposely failed to shout “It’s fine now!” when the reception cleared up thereby causing the tragic accident.
